One of the greatest political leaders in the Tamil State is Muthuvel Karunanidhi, most popularly called as Karunanidhi. He is the president of the DMK – Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. DMK is a Dravidian party founded by C.N Annadurai in 1949.

Since 1969, Karunanidhi headed DMK party. At present M.K Stalin who is son of Karunanidhi is the president of the party.

Karunanidhi became chief minister first time in 1969 after which he was elected as Chief Minister for several times. In 2006 he became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the fifth time.

Political career of Karunanidhi started at age 14, at this age he was inspired by many leaders and their speeches. He participated in Anti-Hindi agitations and took part in several other organizations.

Though the he political carrier started at a young age, but it took time for him to enter the state politics. He won the first Tamil Nadu assembly seat in 1957 election at this time his age was 33.

In 1969 Karunanidhi became the chief minister and this was first time a DMK leader becoming a CM of the state. Many experts believe that it was due to sudden death of Annadurai which created a opportunity for Karunanidhi and from here Karunanidhi’s political career flourished.

As the year went on there were many ups and downs but he was always held a highest post as a party president for many years. DMK has lost and won many elections, there greatest opposition was AIADMK who’s president was Jayalalitha.

In 2011 the DMK lost the state assembly elections with huge margin while giving a political fight to J. Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK party.

Karunanidhi was then the president of the DMK party.
Looking back into his political career there have been many serious allegations made upon him and controversies were made that shook not only the Tamil Nadu state but the entire nation.

One of his serious controversies involved remarks against the existence of Lord Ram, a Hindu God. Again it’s said that Karunanidhi had connections with LTTE who assassinated Rajiv Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India.

Other than this Karunanidhi has been targeted by the opponents for nepotism and other corruption charges.

At present the Karunanidhi the supremo of the DMK is 94 and is ill. He has been hospitalized at the Kauvery Hospital. Many eminent political leaders, actors, businessman, etc. are enquiring about him and praying for his speedy recovery.

The DMK party cadres are deeply hurt and shocked when heard about Karunanidhi’s illness. It’s reported that 21 party workers have given up their life as they could not bear the shock about his illness.
After this Karunanidhi’s son M.K Stalin has urged party worker not to take extreme steps. He further said that he can’t bear the loss of lives that party workers have given up.
Recently, M.K Stalin made a statement about Karunanidhi that his health is normal and said that, “ it’s a good news and giving us confidence.”
